The Christian’s Calling and Living

1 Peter 1
13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
A Christian’s calling: To be holy because God is holy.
How? With an alert and fully sober mind, set on the hope of Jesus Christ’s coming – based on the grace of His death on the cross. Think about God’s grace and look forward to the day of Jesus Christ’s return to take us with Him to be in God’s presence forever.
17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
A Christian’s living: To live as foreigners in reverent fear because Jesus Christ redeemed us with his precious blood.
To live as foreigners means to take an eternal view – know that the present world is temporal. Christians need to live out their days on earth with a mindset of honoring God in reverent fear of Him. It is not about being afraid of his punishment but more of the desire to honor and obey God for who He is. It is about wanting God more than all the world has to offer.
22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,
“All people are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,

25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is the word that was preached to you.
A Christian’s enabling: To obey God’s word because we have been born again through the living and enduring word of God.
To obey the truth of God’s word is to love each other deeply from the heart. God’s Word enables us to love one another sincerely – even the unlovables because God loves us first. We are sinners yet God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. We love because God first loved us.
Bottom line: Everything in the world, all its glory is like grass and flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall. The word of the Lord endures forever. The word of the Lord teaches us:
1) To be holy because God is holy.
2) To live with an eternal mindset because God is gracious.
3) To love one another because God is love.
